This was a science-administration firm run by the brothers Lloyd (Larry) and Fred Newman. Fred was a silent partner in the firm because he was the main in-house lawyer with Philip Morris who also contracted Newman Partners to provide cut-out services for their dubious research activities.

The arrangement came to an abrupt end in September 1990 when Fred suddenly retired from Philip Morris, and Larry returned to North Carolina where he continued to run the firm, but without Philip Morris as a client.

The company became embroiled in a major scandal over Bridgestone tires.
